A Charlotte after-school program that supports students from immigrant and refugee families is scrambling to find funding after a federal grant freeze left them more than $800,000 short.
A Charlotte nonprofit expected $826,000 in federal grant funding Tuesday, but it received notice one day earlier that the federal government was withholding the funding indefinitely. "That's a lot of money to lose with less than 24 hours notice," said Liz Luth, board chair emeritus of OurBRIDGE for KIDS. "That feels like a real kick in the gut."
In a memo, the U.S. Department of Education notified states it will not allocate funding from the 2025 fiscal year to Title I-C, II-A, III-A, IV-A, IV-B grant programs until further review.
