A storm moving across the country could bring 1 to 2 feet of snow to parts of Massachusetts and New England this weekend. It follows an arctic air mass with dangerously cold temps and wind chills.

"Travel will be difficult, especially Sunday night into Monday morning when snowfall accumulation rates will be highest."

Snowfall totals in Massachusetts are expected to surpass 8 inches as a winter storm moves into New England this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Rather than a single “snow map,” forecasters monitoring Winter Storm Fern have been more concerned with a line that is constantly moving: where the precipitation falls as snow versus sleet or freezing rain.

"This storm will more than likely take its place among the top 10 in Lexington history based on what we have found going back to 1887," said Rob Larkin, Lexington's emergency management director, during a press conference Thursday.
