The Essex began its final journey in August 1819, departing its home island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, for the sperm-whale -rich Pacific Ocean.

The Essex crew were attacked by whales in 1820. It inspired "Moby-Dick," and shows that we've been fascinated with the whale interactions for a long time.
