The University of Michigan appointed Syracuse University’s chancellor as its president on Monday, a bid to end four years of leadership upheaval at one of the country’s most respected public schools.

The University of Michigan Board of Regents unanimously voted to formally approve Kent Syverud as the school’s next president, with his term set to start on July 1.

The shooting happened as students and staff returned to campus for the first day of the spring 2026 semester at Temple University.
