The beaches at Assateague Island and Ocean City, Maryland, are closed due to dangerous rip currents and high surf brought on by Hurricane Erin.
A Wisconsin-based Boy Scout troop is stuck in the U.S. Virgin Islands as Hurricane Erin barrels through the Atlantic Ocean.
"Heavy rainfall is possible on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, with potential for a maximum of 4 inches," NHC said Tuesday.
Meteorologists are closely tracking the projected path and forecast of Hurricane Erin, which is the first hurricane to develop over the Atlantic this year.
Erin is a category 3 major hurricane with winds of 115 mph and is located approximately 750 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras as of Tuesday morning.
High surf and dangerous rip currents are likely. People are advised to stay out of the water this week, even when a lifeguard is on duty.
The hurricane’s behavior in recent days makes it one of the fastest-strengthening Atlantic hurricanes on record.
Two more tropical systems trail Hurricane Erin, which is following a projected course that brushes past the East Coast without making landfall.
