Windows 8.1 was designed to support 3D printing in an almost gimmick that’s cool instead of moonshotty, due to the falling price of consumer-grade 3D printers, such as what MakerBot produces.

Microsoft calls the 3D Builder app “the best place to view, prepare, and print your 3D models on Windows 8.1-ready 3D printers”.

Microsoft has released a 3D printing app for Windows 8.1, bringing native support for producing physical objects from a variety of 3D printers to its OS.
