The router on a stick is good for learning but for any topology where there is intra-vlan routing by gigabit capable machines, it is a terrible real world solution.

Another potential reason VLANs aren't on by default is because consumer protocols like DLNA aren't designed to cross broadcast domains, which is essentially what a VLAN is.
