Hyundai is working to make key fobs a thing of the past. At the 2019 New York Auto Show, the automaker will demonstrate a “digital key” app that uses a smartphone to unlock and start a car.

The Sonata’s suite of driver aids includes Hyundai’s ‘digital key’ system, which like the Lincoln Corsair, allows owners to use a smartphone to operate and manage the car.

Customers will be able to lock their Elantra and Sonata cars and Venue SUV doors with a key fob, set a factory alarm and an ignition kill feature.

Hyundai is part of a consortium, along with other carmakers like BMW and Volkswagen, developing standardized specifications for digital key systems.
