With Windows Blue, aka Windows 8.1, Microsoft is reintroducing a Start button and adding a boot-straight-to-desktop option. Here's how these may work.
The Start Screen will be enabled. The Continuum feature allows Windows 10 to switch between the Desktop and Tablet mode seamlessly. To see the Start Screen, click on Winkey or on your Start Button.
When that’s done, just head to the Windows 8 Desktop and you’ll see something that looks like an acorn where the Start button normally resides.
Going away? The Start Button as it appears in the lower left of the traditional desktop view in the public Windows 8 Developer Preview.
Most internal builds of Windows 8.1 do not include the Start button or boot to desktop options, but Microsoft is said to be planning how to add these into the operating system.
