This isn’t the first time the TIPM has caused issues. NHTSA investigated the systems in 2007 after Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro customers complained. That led to an 81,000-unit recall.

An Aug. 21 letter from advocacy group the Center for Auto Safety initiated the review, informing NHTSA of 63 complaints pertaining to problems allegedly caused by the module.

The recall covers vehicles with the TIPM-7 modules, but Chrysler’s recall said the module itself wasn’t defective, but a relay within the module.
