Astral projection is the ability to use the mind to project the soul outside of the material body. The astral plane is the plane of imagination, the plane of infinite possibility, and it's directly connected with the material plane. Everything in the material plane began in the astral as imagination or a thought form. This is where spirits, jinns, entities reside within this fourth dimension. Each one of us hold the ability to connect with the fourth dimension and that's what our imagination is.
