On this day in 1966, Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler debuted his song "Ballad of the Green Berets" on the Ed Sullivan Show. SSG Sadler served with The 7th Special Forces Group as a Special Forces Medic and co-wrote the Ballad with Robin Moore who wrote the book “The Green Berets”, which would later on be turned into a film starring John Wayne. | Green Beret Foundation

On this day in Music History - Sept. 7, 1988 Barry Sadler, who scored a huge 1966 hit with "Ballad Of The Green Berets", is shot while riding in a Guatemala City taxi. Whether someone shot him or the pistol he carried accidentally discharged, will probably never be known.
