A deep litter system is basically a slow, cold composting system. We use large woodchips to around 20-30cm deep and leave them to break down overly months. Combined with the animal manure and rain, it turns into mulchy compost. Usually we t it out and let it mature into proper compost, but this season we’ve just planted directly into it (with a thin layer of mature compost in top) and it had PUMPED.
