December 31, 1969 marked the debut live performance of the BAND OF GYPSYS featuring Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. While the birth of this journey started on April 22 at a recording session at Record Plant, fast-forward 8 months later and this trio had perfected their own unique sound. On May 8, 1970 The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed 2 shows at the University of Oklahoma. The event marked Hendrix's first performance following the tragic Kent State massacre. To pay homage to the fallen, he dove in a stirring rendition of "Machine Gun" during the second set. Captured on tape by audience members, this stellar performance has been preserved as an elegant reminder that music speaks.
