Solid silver musical snuff box, the outer case made by Samuel Pemberton in Birmingham, C.1817 and the mechanism was made at the same time, most likely in Switzerland and then transported then fitted in to the silver case. Snuffboxes were used for containing snuff, a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils, and were very popular in the 18th and 19th century when snuff-taking was fashionable.
