Most of us know Philmont as the backpacking trip of a lifetime. But did you know that Philmont is also a working cattle ranch? When the Scouts acquired Philmont from Waite Phillips in 1941 one condition we agreed to continue its operations as a working cattle ranch. To this day the ranch is home burros, cattle, and bison throughout the 140,177 acres of wilderness. On your trek you'll see these ranch animals roaming around, and if you're lucky you might get to see ranchers on a cattle drive! #phi
