In May-June 1951, UN forces launched their final major counteroffensive of the Korean War in response to the Chinese spring offensive. Beginning May 20th, UN Commander General Matthew Ridgway ordered attacks across the entire front as Chinese and North Korean forces retreated after suffering devastating losses. While western forces pursued withdrawing enemies who escaped faster than the UN could advance, central forces trapped massive numbers of Chinese troops at chokepoints north of Chuncheon.
